The information technology jobs in database management are open to anyone who has a bachelor’s degree in computer science, business administration or database programming. Database Analyst
Database analysts are responsible for overseeing the organization’s database needs. They are member of IT teams of various technological specialties who accomplish the organization’s data management goals. Database analysts provide technical support to IT team related to the collection and administration of databases. They may work on IT business projects to define scopes, create documentation, establish requirements, analyze business functions and translate objectives into structured design documents.
For example, they may use analysis diagrams and scenarios to map out database flows, develop system solutions and conduct end user testing. They may also coordinate business relationship with key internal partners in order to maintain project controls that accurately manage appropriate budgets, schedules and milestones. Database analysts perform changes to baseline requirements, establish change control processes and help develop strategic IT plans and processes.
Database Management Associate
Database management associates are entry-level IT professionals who handle daily administration tasks, ongoing system maintenance and managed company user licenses. They maintain user roles, profiles and security settings by monitoring end-user usage of systems. They analyze and improve requested changes to existing databases, report and resolve database application issues and communicate with database vendors and third-party systems contractors.
They create and manage the database’s custom fields, formulas, objects, workflows, page layouts and assignment rules. They perform data integrity checks by merging duplicate records, importing and exporting data and running diagnostic software. They establish end-user ownership of new accounts and help end users problem solve issues. Database management associates create custom reports, develop new dashboards and create new product training and support documentation. They may cross-trained with other departments as needed, such as procurement, customer service, accounts payable and market research.
IT Database Systems Manager
IT database systems managers maintain and monitor operational architecture and technical environments. They are responsible for backup management and disaster recovery of managed systems. They plan and implement system enhancements and software installations. They evaluate and recommend database system monitoring solutions and performance tools. They may establish technical processes and internal standards for requesting database solutions. They are ultimately responsible for the overall management of database related budgets and expenses.
IT database systems managers provide project management oversight to carry out assignments and provide an advanced level of technical expertise in planning and implementing new database systems. They usually have a bachelor’s degree in systems analysis, computer science or database administration. Most employers expect them to have experience with database analysis, system programming and hardware and software evaluation. They may be exepcted to have an expert level understanding of object oriented programming.
